Buna-N O-rings are acceptable for this application. However, this seal has to hold for 40+ years because all nitrogen lost is lost for good and slow leaks are difficult to pinpoint and to repair. There is a concern that the oring will eventually wear out under undulating loading. Therefore this sight glass is bonded to 316L stainless instead of using Buna-N Orings. For more challenging applications we use metal seals.
